Our family has a wonderful tradition. Instead of buying a gift for every person in the family, we draw names and make a homemade gift for the lucky recipient. We then choose a special night where the gifts are unveiled. Since Kade and Taylor are leaving for Hawaii this week to be with her family over the holidays (we will be joining them on the 26th), this “most wonderful night of the year” happened last Sunday night at my parents house.
Let me just say that is was truly magical. We laughed. We cried. We basked in the love that we feel for each other.
Taylor and I had each other. I made her a 50-year Christmas scrapbook. The idea behind it is to take a holiday photo of her and Kade’s family every year and watch how they they change and grow in numbers over the years. I also downloaded some free, cool Becky Higgins quotes that I put in Christmas frames. Taylor made me three wire necklace “charms” that can be interchangeable on the beautiful silver chain I’m wearing
Kade made his dad a “pillow desk” for his laptop computer. Steve loves it and uses it constantly.
Sage made Kade a pencil/pen/Sharpie holder. Black beans inside the container hold all the writing tools in place.
Steve made Brecken a “sunburst” frame with his favorite quote from the movie “Dan in Real Life.” It features an adorable photo of them when she was a little girl.
Stefyn made Sage an idea binder of cools ways to style hair. The outside boasts an original poem written by Stefyn.
The funniest gift of the night was Collin’s present to Stefyn:
He sculpted a monkey head out of clay since Stefyn’s favorite animal is a monkey.
The present that made us all cry was Brecken’s gift to Collin. She wrote original lyrics dedicated to Collin to the song “Butterfly Fly Away.” She framed the lyrics and had Collin silently read them while she sang the song to him. All of us in the room were crying. It was so heartfelt and adorable.
Maybe you’ve already had your “most wonderful night of the year.” Maybe it’s right around the corner. Whatever time it may be, remember to enjoy all the magical moments and to find joy in the journey.
