Mishaps in Yellowstone

My August message on my home page describes a wonderful trip that I recently took to Yellowstone with my parents, husband and daughters. Here are some photos of our gang along with an adorable photo of my parents walking down a quiet dirt road holding hands.

What I didn't disclose were the many mishaps along the way. While traveling to the park, Steve took a sharp turn in our truck while driving out of a gas station and the 40-foot fifth wheel (a cross between a trailer and motor home) we were towing behind the truck didn't quite make the turn. Instead it came crashing into the back of the truck, shattering the window directly behind my mom's head. With hundreds of pieces of glass in her hair, down her shirt and pants and all over her body she calmly looked at me at said, "Did Steve mean to do that?" We all still go into fits of laughter when we think of her response! Luckily all was okay--my mom only had one small scratch on the back of her neck. We all pitched in, swept up the mess and duct-taped the window. (Thank goodness for Duct Tape!) Just moments after the last piece was attached, a huge downpour of rain descending upon us and we were able to get in the car before we got drenched. My 5-year-old's response once we all got in the car was priceless. She said,"I prayed that it wouldn't rain until we got the window fixed and Heavenly Father answered my prayer!" Oh the faith of a child! The rest of the trip to Yellowstone was spent in good spirits despite the $1,500 worth of damage. My favorite part was hearing my dad and 9-year-old Brecken singing duets together.

The next day Steve and I were riding a motorcyle through the park when we got caught in another downpour including hail. Try riding through this on a motorcycle going 50 miles an hour--not fun! We were grateful to finally get to a lodge where I bought new sweat pants and stood under a hand dryer for several minutes!

The next day was perfect except Sage woke up soaked on a brand new bunk bead mattress. She'd had an accident during the night and just slept right through it. I remembered what my dad said when I was 16 and went through the automatic garage door with my first car--"People are worth more than things." So--I didn't make a big deal about it and cleaned it up the best I could. Any advice on cleaning mattresses? Please post them to me. I've never really known the secret to this!

All in all a GREAT trip. I'd recommend Yellowstone to anyone of any age. What a wonderful time!

Find Joy in the Journey!

Lisa B.

P.S. I took 162 Yellowsone photos in two days. I'm sure you'll be seeing lots of layouts!

I am so glad that everyone was ok.
That is scary.

That's the hard way to start a vacation.
I know, a few years back my husband was driving through Wyoming to go to Flaming Gorge, the wind swept our trailer around came off the ball and hit the truck knocking the truck around. My hubby trying his best to keep control of everything saw the trailer flip on it's side and come to a crashinf rest.

It is a Miracle that my son or him didn't get hurt. I would much rather the trailer be toast then loose my family members.

Hi Lisa-Thanks for sharing your photos and comments about your vacation. You inspire me in so many ways. As for the mattress-I know you couldn't have cleaned it well when you were on your trip but if you happen to have one of those steamer-vacuums (i got mine from Sears), the hand attachment & hose is great for cleaning mattress accidents. My 2 year old has spilled chocolate milk and she's had an accident while watching TV on her sister's bed. I used the steamer vacuum's hose and hand attachment to extract the milk/pee and after extracting what I could, I went over it again using a mixture of oxyclean and hot water to 'clean' it and then extracted that out with the steamer-vac attachment. It removed the stain, there was no smell after it dried. I made sure I let the mattress dry really well by leaving it uncovered and keeping a fan on the wet area for a full day. (it also helps I am in dry Arizona).

It was the first time my family went (I went about 30 yrs ago) and we toured it in Japanese...a different twist! The boys (including DH) and I loved it...great education for all! We toured Mt. Rushmore/Crazy Horse Memorial/Devil's Tower/Yellowstone/Grand Teton/SLC in 5 days (w/ little side trips to other locations along the way)...I think I only took 350+ pics. LOVE my DSLR!!!! I will look to your blog for inspiration on my trip! Thanks! MargieH in Chicago

Hi Lisa, love your blog. Sounds like the mishaps we have on our vacations, lol.

For the mattress, take it out of the camper and use a steam vac to clean it. I have the Hoover steam vac which has an upholstery attachment. I have used it on my dd's mattress (before I bought the waterproof matress pad cover which would be another good idea.) and on our couch, works like a dream. HTH

Foolproof way to get new urine stains out of a mattress--sprinkle heavily with baking soda, and rub in so that it looks like flour poured on the stain. Leave it there for an hour or two, then vacuum up. The baking soda absorbs the moisture, and doesn't leave a ring. You may want to then spray with fabreeze and then let it dry completely. Hope this helps!

Lisa...Enjoy it greatly when I can catch the QVC Scrapbooking programs, but am frustrated that so many of them are presented while I'm at work (Monday to Friday, 7AM to 6PM). Do weekends have too much competition for the good time slots? I live in Sacramento, California and would love to catch you on QVC more often. The product demos are fun and give me ideas for using the products. P.S. This is my first response to any blog

Hi Lisa, can't wait to see you on QVC next week. We just missed you in Yellowstone, we were there July 28 for 4 days. We hadn't been there since "68" with our 2 yr. old. This time it was just my husband of 40 yrs. and me. We took around 2000 pictures during the three weeks we were gone, I burned CD's every night at our hotel! It took us 5 hr. 45 min. to drive 33 miles cause we stopped so often for pictures and look at waterfalls, geysers, ect. We took our 3 kids, 5 grandkids and 4 other people with us on the week long eastern Disney Cruise in Dec. to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. I'm very anxious to get started srapbooking the "out west" trip and to finish the Disney scrapbook. You make it look so easy and I love watching you on QVC, especially with David. Can't wait to see some of your pages from the west. M

Love your mom's reaction to the window! Sounds like, except for a few snags (who's not going to have those?), the trip was great!

Stains, etc . . .I head for the Queen of Clean. She seems to have a formula for everything. Her mattress one, however, seems more time consuming than the hints above.

Like your dad says, people are more important than things. Glad you and your family were safe! Your mom's comment is priceless and definitely deserves to be scrapped, LOL! As to the mattress, I'd just get another one. I don't know if they can be cleaned satisfactorily or not. Riding a motorcycle in a hail storm does not sound like fun...it really sounds very dangerous!

Sharing your vacation stories with us is for us like having been there. Thanks, and yes! I do have something for "accidents". Back in my homeland,Peru, a mix of baking soda and water, (around 1 tsp diluted in 1/2 cup of cold water) is used to eliminate undesired smell from blankets, pillows, fabrics. It after cleaning the matress, the smell persists, then but a new one as it was suggested above. Good luck! Charo

My DD and I just spent a week scrapping or scrap-shopping together.. What fun!
Your motorcycling in hail storm reminded me of a trip our family of two sons their wives, another single son, my DH and I... all on seperate cycles. We left the North Rim of Grand Canion on our way to Mesa Verde when we were caught in a hail storm, doing 85 down a stretch of hiway we encounter two police cars... They were beside the road motioning for us to go on. WHEW, what a fortune they passed up, seven cycles doing 85mph...
That was before my introduction to scrapbooking... I will never catch up!!! (but trying)
Love your Blog!

Lisa,

Great blog! I've successfully used borax on a toddler mattress accident--I did use a waterproof mattress pad, but the plastic in the durn thing had ripped, and...you guessed it....that's exactly where the accident happened. I just rubbed a generous amount of borax on the stain after i sopped up as much as possible with a towel. When the borax dried, it removed everything...sort of like it sucked up the remaining liquid and the smell with it. Not sure if it will work once the stain is already dried. You might have to mist it wet again for the borax to work.

It's probably a similar method to the baking soda one; but if that didn't work, try the borax. Or throwing the mattress out and starting new works, too. :)

You could rewet the spot & pour lots of baking soda on it, let absorb & once dry you vacuum. May not remove stain but takes the odor away. Hope that helps!

Your comment about your father's response to your garage door incident reminded me of a saying that I used to hear from my father as a little girl when one of us (5 kids in the family) would break something expensive. He used to say "In life you can choose kids or things....and we chose kids." Now that I have 3 kids of my own - I know now what he meant!

Thanks so much for sharing yourself with us! I love hearing about your family and mishaps and life in general. Helps me through some rough patches here.

As for the mattress, we use ALOT of a cleaner called Nature's Miracle. We use it for our puppy's accidents but I'm sure it'd be great on human stains/smells too. You can find it at hardware stores and pet stores.

Good luck!

We were up in Yellowstone at the beginning of August with friends who had never been there. We had a great time showing them around and saw a lot of animals (no bears, although we saw many people "camped out" waiting to take pictures of them). We did some lazy rafting down at Mack's Inn and dh had fun with his catch and release fly fishing.

Sounds like you had a memorable trip - the best kind!

Jeanne

PS We've used that little steam cleaner, too. Works great!

Sounds like a wonderful trip! And what great pictures you have to scrap. I hope to get to Yellowstone one day. It looks absolutely gorgeous!
As far as your mattress, call your professional carpet/upholstry cleaner. Yep, they clean mattresses too! And it has the pressure to push the water in and the power to really extract it out. You can use regular household Lysol if you need to deodorize. It's just like a piece of furniture. When he's done, set it outside to dry if it's a nice day. It'll be dry in no time. I have mine cleaned at least once a yr. after seeing what kind of bedbugs we have. lol

We had just bought a new mattress for our master bedroom when my husband decided to wipe out in shorts on a gas powered scooter. After a visit to the emergency room, we came home and went to bed and woke up to a lot of blood all over our new mattress (yes, there is a Road Rash scrapbook page with photos of his eight inch by four inch road rash!). We promptly went out and bought a Bissell Little Green Pro at Target. It's been worth every penny (It's well under $100). I don't remember how I ever cleaned up any yucky mess or gross substance (can you tell I have children?) without it!

Congrats on your great vacation. I adore your work and style. I am a newbie and have gotten into acrylic stamping and loving it! Having had 3 kids best way to clean a mattress is to get out your steam cleaner and not drench the mattress. Also get a plastic cover from Wal-Mart etc (they have noiseless ones too) and place it on the bed under the fitted sheet.

Lisa, I spilled a large glass of OJ on my new white carpet in my SB room last year...Needless to say I was frantic...but I poured a box of "Arm&Hammer Baking Soda" over the stain, and left it alone for two weeks. After two weeks, the baking soda was dry and when I vacuumed the floor, there was no trace of the OJ stain on my carpet. Every drop of OJ had been absorbed by the baking soda! So you might give this tip a try. Paris646
