Big Surprise When I Got Home!

I was gone most of last week (Memory Trends and QVC). Some of my girlfriends from Utah went to Philly with me and we spent a couple of extra days in Philly, Gettysburg and Amish Country.

So, I got home late Sunday night to an extra member of the family.

Steve and the kids have been begging for a Beagle for years and Saturday night they couldn't resist. I've been saying "no" for the past four years since we moved in this house. A stray black lab showed up on the front porch of our last home and we called the pound, then ended up adopting her. Molly was a wonderful dog but lots of work and lots of dog hair! And--I was the one who paid the most attention to her. Two years later, a neighbor was moving to Reno on 20 acres and begged to take Molly with her. We decided it would be best since we were moving and our new yard wasn't fenced in at the time.

So--I've been resisting a dog--a cat and rat were about all I could handle. Steve said that one day I'd come home to a Beagle puppy ... and he followed through on his promise!

Now we have Maggie and since I've been home she's had numerous accidents on the hard wood floor, rugs, neighbor's carpet, sister's floor. But--I have to admit she's darling and Steve and the kids are quite smitten by her. I'm sure I'll warm up to her as well! She really is a great little dog--doesn't yelp or whine at night and loves hanging out in her crate.

So--that was my big news. Let's hope there are blessings in heaven for taking care of animals (I know there are for children so there's got to be for pets!).

Here's a photo of Kade's big Homecoming Dance. It was Saturday night and they had lots of fun. His "friend" lives two doors down from us and we are good friends with her family.

I put all my Fall/Halloween decorations up yesterday. I'm loving this time of year. And--my neighbor Allison Norton brought down the yummiest cookies. Had to share the recipe--perfect for Fall.

Molasses Cookies

Cream together for two minutes:
1 cup shortening
1 cup butter
2 eggs

Add slowly and cream for five minutes:
2 cups sugar

Add to above mixture:
1/2 cup molasses
1 t. salt
4 t. soda
2 t. cinnamon
2 t. ginger
2 t. ground cloves
4 cups flour

Roll in balls, then in sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes. These are light and fluffy. Warning: You can't eat just one!

Happy Crisp Weather!

Lisa-
Such a cute dog! We got a Beagle a few months ago and I promise you won't regret it! I did have many days of wondering what I was thinking when we got a dog but he is very smart and trained quite easily-- I'm sure Maggie will be the same! We were accident free in less than a month!

I also read a fact in a dog book that said Beagles get the award for being the "most lovable" dog!

Congratulations on the new puppy! I gave in to a new puppy just one month ago after years of my boys begging for a dog. He is a sweetie, but a lot of work. I hope you're right about credit in heaven for taking care of pets.

The Beagle pup is the cutest thing ever, our beagle is almost two(Buckeye) we just moved to Provo from Ohio. The best is when they discover their little "baying" voice. Ours has never barked! cute dogs but they have so much energy. We crate trained and now he is a really good dog. Good Luck, your a really good sport!

Maggie is adorable! I'm of the opinion that God made puppies cute so we don't kick them out when they tinkle on the hard-wood floors.

And thanks for the recipe! I can't wait to try them!

Hi Lisa!

Love Maggie!! We have a blind (from diabetes) beagle named Buddy that is going to be 9 this December! :) Just wanted to let you know....in case you didn't...you have to make sure that you keep her ears clean and dry, because beagles have a tendency to get ear infections (because of their floppy ears).....Just wanted to let you know! :)
Have a wonderful day!

Very cute pup! But what I like even more are the names of your dogs - those are the names of 2 of my DAUGHTERS! How cute is that?!?

I think your puppy is cute - glad she isn't a howler...at least not yet :) I think by allowing the puppy you are caring for you children (teaching them how to care for other living creatures and making them happy too) so I'd say you did the right thing. And be grateful it wasn't a snake, scorpion, or something icky :) hee, hee.

We put up our decorations on Oct 1st...can't wait.

At church on Sunday, my aunt, Lisa Hunter, pointed your son out to me and told me she and Rob wanted Lindsay to marry him. So he must be a pretty good kid.

I would have a heart attack if I came home and my husband had a dog. You are a good sport.

You're a "nice" mom, Lisa! Though great pets, I say a dog is like having another child! Especially the puppy stage (This too shall pass!). I'll be ready when my kids are willing to scoop the poop! Your kids are older, so she'll be fun for everyone. She's a cutie pie. And just think, you'll have a good reason to go scrapbook shopping--for dog embellishment stuff!

P.S. Handsome group of kids!! Hope they had fun at Homecoming. Y'all are so BLESSED to have "Christmas Trees" in your yards to enjoy everyday!!! (Along with mountains, parks, lakes, etc.) Just BEAUTIFUL there!!! Do you ever get "used" to it? You probably enjoy it more now that you travel to so many places that aren't so blessed! hee.hee.

Maggie is so cute!!! Of course, I'm a bit biased. We have a 12 year old beagle named Sophie, and we love her so much!!! She loves to be close to us wherever we are in the house. She's a major shedder though. With the amount of hair I vacuum up she should be bald! Enjoy her!

Lisa, I promise you will LOVE LOVE LOVE having a Beagle!!! My husband and I adopted one from a Beagle rescue here in New England in 2004 and it is the BEST thing we ever did. We don't have kids (unfortunately we can't) and I am not saying a dog is a replacement but he has brought so much joy and unconditional love to our lives. He is perfect for us and I can't imagine loving him less if we had a child!!! I totally agree with the person who said Beagles are a breed known for bieng most lovable...it is sooo true!!! And they are smart as can be...you all will have little Maggie trained in no time!!! Congratulations on the newest member of your family!!!

OK, that puppy is adorable, but look at that smile on your hubby's face! That says it ALL! He's smitten with that girl, and that's all you need right there! He looks positively giddy! How adorable!

I cannot let myself decorate until October 1st. It's this "thing" I have. I don't want to decorate too early! Same for Christmas. I decorate on December 1st! I'm crazy that way!

Cute photo from the dance! Your son is getting to be such a young MAN! He's very cute!

Take care!

Good luck with Maggie. We have a beagle - wish I'd known/realized how much they shed. Have fun sweeping up the dog hair on those hardwoods! You'll be amazed at how much hair one dog can lose!

Beagles are so SUPER SWEET! Our neighbor has a Beagle. The sweetest dog ever! Just a warning tho....Beagles are very smart. Our neighbors Beagle(Mack is his name)figured out how to surpass their invisible fence(electronic in ground fence system). All our neighbors have this system in their yards to keep their pets in the yard. However, Mack is the only dog I have seen that gets by the fence. Ha! He follwed us home one day and we had to bring him home so he wouldn't get run over. Naughty!

Puppies are alot of work at first in potty training. Good luck with all that! Keep in mind it only last a short time if trained right. Now with that said, my dog(a shih tzu) is almost ten years old and she just took a poo poo on the floor lastnight. ha ha ha......are they ever really trained? At her defense......she tried to tell me she had to go outside but I thought she was just happy to see me. ha! Luckily, it happened on the tile floor.

I hope your family has many fond and happy memories with your new addition to the family.

ps-Thanks for the cookie recipe(YaH-Love cookies). Isn't fall just so much FUN? I need to get my Fall decor out ...thanks for the reminder.

What a sweet face! She looks like my best friend's old dog, my "godbeagle," Snoopy. She was a wonderful dog, a real personality, too. We miss her terribly.

My daughter would love a dog, but I'm allergic to many of them, including beagles. She's hoping modern science will come up with a way to "fix" her mom.

Kade's photo was great. What a lovely set of kids! Hope they had fun.

Those molasses cookies sound delicious, too. My grandma always used to have molasses cookies on hand. She felt they aided digestion! :)

I'm jealous of your trip to Gettysburg! I'm a Civil War enthusiast. I'd love to got there for a re-enactment someday. Such hallowed ground.

God Bless,
Colleen

Maggie is absolutely adorable and I don't know how she hasn't stolen your heart yet. Dogs are wonderful and will love you no matter what whenever you want. Of course, there are credits in heaven for taking care of animals -just wait until you get that first snuggle from that little one that just wants to love you and doesn't expect anything else from you.

SO love your new little girl. We are on our second Beagle and I am a commited Beagle person, we'll never no have a Beagle in our lives. They are so gentle and sweet. Baron (our beagle) and my son Ray who is four are constantly chasing each other through the house. Congrats. You've found the best breed out there. Also make sure and try to get him to sing (bay) by howling. It's the cutest thing ever. Ok, I done now.

Hi Lisa,
Congratulations on the newest addition to the Bearnson family! Maggie is adorable!

We finally gave in and adopted a puppy of our own last year. The first month is tough as they are being trained. We litter box trained our puppy and she's a wonderful addition to the family. By the way, I love the name Maggie. It was our top choice for our puppy's name, but I was pregnant at the time and knew we wanted to name our daughter Madeline. We thought it would be confusing with Maggie and Maddie.

Good luck with Maggie!

What a beautiful little girl (Maggie). As the proud mamma of three beagles I dearly love (Molly, Maddie, and Max), I wonder if your husband knew what he was doing!!! :-) Molly was the ultimate escape artist going over and under the fence. We installed a wireless fence and she did great with that; Maddie however, didn't mind the little jolt she got when she wanted to go play with other dogs in the neighborhood. They are now 12 and 10 years old and such great companions.

I bet your little girl finds her "voice" around 5 months old though.

I had the same thing happen to me in August Lisa. Only we got a golden retriever puppy. She no longer has accidents, but boy is she big! :)

Enjoy the puppy she will only get bigger and turn into a doggie! :)

Have fun and Happy Fall!

Oh Lisa! Welcome to the world of Beagles!
We have a 4 year old male beagle.
They are LOTS of work but make great family dogs and are wonderful with children.
E-mail me if you need some tips! We have been able to figure out a few.
P.S. Purchase some books all about Beagles. You will need them!
