My "Random Act" winner revealed
Today I had one of those days. Work deadlines, homework, practicing piano with kids, trying to find the right choir music for our church Christmas program (I'm the choir director), laundry (always laundry) and grocery shopping all took its toll. I had decided to do my random act of kindness tonight but have to admit I was a little grumpy when I left and was trying to get in the right mood.
Before I go on, let me reveal whose random act of kindness I copied. Just a refresher--I gave a challenge last Friday for readers to do a random act of kindness for someone within the next 72 hours--just like someone had done for me the day before (I received the adorable necklace shown on the next blog entry). I promised to give a necklace like the one I received to the person I chose to copy their random act of kindness.
Okay--so I had a really tough time deciding on just one. I loved all your deeds--from raking leaves, to buying Wendy's for the next person in the drive through, to creating blank cards with envelopes and stamps and handing them out to teachers at school. I was inspired by all the homemade goodies (casseroles), the donated toys and clothing and the listening ear to a friend in need. Honestly--it was a tough decision.
However, when I read BRENDA EIEN's entry, I knew what I wanted to do. (Congratulations, Brenda! Please contact angeladash@gmail.com with your address.)
Brenda went to a convalescent center and painted fingernails. Love this idea! And Brenda, you'll love the "B" necklace I'll be sending you. And--the owner of Dear Lizzie read my blog and offered to donate it! Wow--I was blown away! (Lots of people have asked how to get a necklace. You can go to the Dear Lizze web site--mydearlizzie.com--or call 801/492-0022 to order one. Tell Laura, the owner, that Lisa sent you.)
So tonight, in my "I've had a hard day" mood, my friend Stephanie and I took Sage, Brecken and nine other girls to the care center where my dear neighbor, Loving Lena (she's married to Cheerful Charlie), recently moved to.

Lena has Alzheimer's and is just a sweetheart. She was so excited we were all there.
The girls and I painted 15-20 ladies fingernails and boy, oh, boy--what fun we had. The girls were so loving and talkative and the ladies were so appreciative to us being there.
Sage spent a solid half hour just trying to get the old polish off this gal's nails.

Here is Nina's new polish job--by six-year-old Sage! She loved it!

I went to check on Brecken and she was filing a lady's nails with one hand, and holding the gal's hand next to her.

Wow! An experience like this just makes your own worries melt away! It is true that when you're in the service of your fellow being, you are only in the service of your God. And what a good feeling this is! The girls LOVED it. They didn't want to leave and begged to go back and sing to them in December.
Thanks, Brenda, for giving me the idea for this random act of kindness. I'm in such a better mood tonight and it's all because of my time spent at the care center.
Here are the other 10 random winners. I will send you a new Sketches book by Becky Higgins. (Please send your mailing information to angeladash@gmail.com.)

This absolutely moved me to tears! You see, my great grandmother had Alzheimer's and the pictures of the hands just made me remember hers and how she loved to have her nails done. Next week on the 23rd, it will be 3 yrs since she passed away. I am thankful that I photographed her hands!
Thanks for sharing your story and great choice!

Okay, my response did not go through, so I hope it does not post twice. I just wanted to say thank you, Lisa, for sharing and getting pictures for us to see your RAK. I think it is great that your girls shared in the experience, too.

Great idea Brenda! Just wonderful! Congratulations!
What a wonderful experience for your girls - and the ladies in the care center. My grandmother has end-stage Alzheimers. I wish I lived close enough to her to go and do this - she lives across the country from me. Your story is beautiful, Lisa. Blessings to you all!

What a great idea, somehow I missed this one when reading all the wonderful stories.
I have to tell you though...I had a wonderful gal contact me after reading my post on your blog and she has volunteered to help me get cameras to help with my scrapbooking at the Mission and in the future with the Foster care group. So I REALLY did win!! As the kindness keeps moving on.
thanks so much for all you do.

GREAT IDEA BRENDA!!! Congratulations! Lisa...I tried to go to the Dear Lizzie website. I got there, but it wouldn't let me click on any of the boxes on the right, which I assume are supposed to take you to the products. Am I doing something wrong? Please let me know how to look at her stuff.
Thanks,
Laura (berrybest1)
LOVE IT!! they did a GREAT JOB!!!!! How cool and thoughtful!!!
Wow, what a truly wonderful idea! We are driving from CA (through Utah) to Idaho to visit my grandparents and my grandmother (86yo) has Alzheimers as well. I'm just excited that my children can still visit with her (even though she doesn't remember who they are) because she truly made my childhood memorable!
That is so amazing. It's something I am going to do before the holidays - such a wonderful idea. And I ordered 4 necklaces from Dear Lizzie. Should be in a couple of weeks....yahoo!
Thanks
Stacy

Thank you for having another one of your great contests, Lisa!
I loved reading all the stories people had to tell, and acts they decided to do last weekend...I was moved to tears a few times!
You made an exellent choice, going with Brenda's idea. I wish my oldest son wasn't so "nervous" about the elderly. The first sign he had this feeling was years ago when our Playgroup went to vist a Senior Center at Christmas time. He was upset by the "scary" hands pictured on your Blog today...the same hands I think (along with other comment made earlier) that they are beautiful!...something else to "work on"... lol...Erin : )
Wow Lisa, you never stop amazing me how wonderful you continue to be. You have inspired since the day I met you and you continue to do so. I am so thankful that the Lord brought you and your family to my family's lives.
Keep going girlfriend! Someday we'll have that lunch!
What an awesome idea.
Just reading the story of Brenda's "gift" and your family's response to it blessed my morning. Thanks to both of you for inspiring us all!
That is so beautiful. I have to copy that one some day soon also!
Lisa, I think it's so fun to read and play your challenges and it's obvious that so many others feel the same way...so it is especially nice to see you do a challenge like this. It was so inspiring and really refreshed my faith in humanity. Thanks for using the blessings God has given you to inspire others.

What a special person you are and what you are teaching your girls will be a lifelong lesson of love and concern for others. They are lucky to have you as a Mom.
Your girls are blessed to have you as a Mom and teaching them life lessons.
This is such a great topic you started Lisa, so many great ideas. I need to go do this too, I love painting nails. What a cool idea,it really makes me want to get out and share kindness.
Love Ya,
Sunny
Sorry if this is a repeat. My comments NEVER post. Can't figure out why.....trying again. You are a blessing for your children.
I have never commented before but after reading this I felt I had to. I work in a retirement home as a receptionist with over 300 residents. What a wonderful thing you and the girls did for these women. I see these things happen every once in a while here, and I don't think any of us will ever fully appreciate how much just something as small as a manicure means to these people. I can tell you without even being there that you made them feel so wonderful that day, and they will talk about it for many days to come. I know that they would love to have people come back and sing for them in December as well, as my residents get such a thrill from it as well! Thanks you Lisa for all your wonderful stories!
Calli
Loved your idea and as a person who has worked with elderly in skilled nursing facilities and "memory care facilities" I know what a visit from children and a loving touch can do. It is a beautiful thing.
I thought that I would let you know what my 75 yr old mom suggested we do (not knowing anything about your blog, let alone what a blog is..) Our local newpaper ran an ad for a grocery store that was offering all the fixings for a Thanksgiving Dinner, all for $20.00. I have a friend with 2 children that has been separated from her husband for about 7 months now and he suffered a pretty bad heart attack a couple of weekends ago. My dear mom suggested that we purchase the dinner for them. Without a second thought, I clipped the "coupon and shopping list" from the ad, purchased $25.00 gift card and made a thanksgiving card for her with these things tucked into a pocket when she opened the card. On the front of the card I put a quote from Oprah Winfrey, "Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough. This certainly fits in with your random acts of kindness!!
Ann
Thank you so much for sharing this
Lisa, that seriously made me cry and have goosebumps. My grandmother had early onset Alzheimers and died when I was in junior high school. I never really got to know her before she was sick. I remember going to visit her and seeing all of the other people who were battling this disease. I think what you and your girls did for them mean more to them and to their families than you could possibly imagine. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful experience.
Lisa,
What a wonderful act of kindness you and your girls did. Lena Spurrier is my grandmother and it is wonderful to see her smiling and enjoying the time you spent with her. I know she appreciated it!
Thank you,
Janet Mclain
I just loved the stories of random acts! Our family has a 12 days of Christmas tradition. We pick a family who goes out of their way, unnoticed in their acts of kindness or service. We secretly deliver, in the dark, a gift for 12 days previous to Christmas Eve something to do w/the day in the song. Then on Christmas eve we reveal who we are and thank them for who they are and the kindness & service that goes unnoticed by most. Ex: Janitor of the church, secretary of the church, youth pastor who stood in for pastor for 1 year while he served in the Army...etc. This will be our 8th year to do this. It's such a blessing to bless them!!
Oh Lisa,
that is so sweet of you and your girls.
just wanted to wish you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving this week.
my anniversary is Nov 25th (18 years) isn't that your too? Are you and your hubby doing anything special? I got mine tickets to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Add me to a waitlist for the December Stamp of the month. Thanks
