Lesson Learned from the Live Nativity!

Our family started a tradition last year of attending an amazing live nativity at a local church at the first of December (thanks, Marci, for introducing us to this!). Last night was the last night to attend this wonderful event. About an hour before we were leaving, Collin told us about a basketball game he needed to play in at 7:20 p.m. Okay--shift in plans. We decided to all go to basketball game to cheer Collin on, then rush to the nativity. It closed at 9:00 p.m. and we'd just barely make it but I was determined for us all to go.

Of course nothing ever goes as planned. The game before Collin's went into overtime which put his game way behind. At 8:45 p.m. I had the family go in the car and rushed to get Collin out the door right after the game. I went outside the facility expecting to find Steve and the kids with the car pulled up to the curb ready to go. Instead I found him and Kade pushing a stalled car over by our truck to jump start it (we'd taken two vehicles to the game). I got in my car with Brecken, Sage and Collin and left alone for the nativity. I hate to admit it but I was a tiny bit irritated inside (luckily none of my family could tell I was feeling like this). I looked around at the other dozens of people who were also leaving the game and thought, "Can't someone else help this lady? Why did Steve and Kade volunteer to do this when we're in such a hurry?"

Our family made it to the nativity and Steve and Kade made it 10 minutes later (there was a huge line so it was no big deal that they were late). The feeling there was incredible. We reverently walked past shepherds, wisemen, even a camel, donkey, llama and other animals.

Then we went inside the streets of Bethlehem and silently walked past a tax collector, pottery maker, carpenter, street vendors and lepers.

Suddenly an Inn Keeper came behind a door and told us there was no room in the inn. We then went around the corner and there was a beautiful site to behold--Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child in a simple stable.

With tears streaming down my face, the scripture from Matthew 25:35 came to mind as I stared at this beautiful child: "I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in."

I then looked at Steve and Kade and realized they showed pure Christ-like love just a few minutes before--"when ye have done it unto the least of these my brethern ye have done it unto me." I was trying to keep to a schedule and wanted so badly to make it to the nativity that for a moment I'd forgetten this important principle.

Today I've been more aware of the needs around me. I've been less in a hurry. I've been more patient. I've been a little kinder. I've been very grateful for last night's experience--for the nativity and the reminder of what this season is really all about.

Okay--so that was my little experience. I've learned throughout my life that a little humbling is always a good thing.

By the way, my outing with Cheerful Charlie this afternoon was delightful. We (Steve, Brecken and Sage went with me) went to his son's home and watched Sissel on a revolutionary home theater system (I've never heard sound like that before). Thanks for the fun time, Charlie.

Have a great weekend and remember the reason for the season.

With Gratitude,
Lisa B.

Thank you for sharing that experience with us. You are so lucky to have a live nativity to attend. What a beautiful thing to be able to do as a family.

Also, thank you for thinking about maybe making more stamps. I was waiting for payday and totally missed out, so I hope you make more.

Merry Christmas!

Lisa, that live Nativity sounds amazing. I don't think we have anything like that around here. Your husband and Kade did the right thing, I'm sure you know that now, although, like you, I'm sure I would have been a little annoyed that my evening did not go as planned. Thanks for the gorgeous pics and great story. Also glad to hear you had a good time at Cheerful Charlie's son's house.

Lisa, Sounds like you had a wonderful evening and an experience you won't forget. I love that you spend so much time with your family and you really do enjoy yourself.
I love spending time with my family and we all remember the real reason for celebrating Christmas. My husband and my kids are so important to me and we are a very close family too. At the end of the day, that is what counts most to me. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

Lisa,

You are such a great woman! I love your blog because its not just about scrapbooking, you put family and Gospel related things in to! It's such a treat to rewind from a long day at school/work and read your blogs! My husband and I are just up the road from you,(well Cache Valley, so I suppose it's a little more then 'up' the road) and I was wondering where this church is? It's our first Christmas as a married couple, and we're looking for some fun holiday traditions to start. Have a lovely weekend!

WOW! Thanks for sharing such an amazing experience. I need to find out where this live nativity is. I'm the girl you met at Costco last night, so I know I live nearby. :) Thanks for the great reminder of what this season is all about.

We all need to slow down and remember what the holiday season is about. I know you have made me think twice about it. The pictures really touched me.

Keep up the great work on the web-site and QVC.

Lisa, you're so funny! I work on patience everyday. I was in line at Starbucks the other day (I love the Chai Tea Lattes with whip) and the car ahead of me was taking what seemed to be FOREVER!!! I was thinking all kinds of impatient thoughts like, "Man! Are they buying one for the whole office?" And, "What is their DEAL? Get out of the way!!!" Anyway, it was my turn to pull up to the window and when I went to pay, the girl said the car ahead of me had bought my tea! Boy, did I feel like a dog or what? Having thought all of that to myself! Ha.Ha. I'll have to "pay that forward"! It's good you share your not-so-proud moments too. We all have to hold each other accountable! (And none of us are perfect!) :) Thanks!

We have a nativity similar to the one you showed, near our home. We try to get the whole family to take the nativity walk every year.
One year as we strolled along our granddaughter Cassidy kept running ahead. All of a sudden she came running back to us yelling: "I found Him! I found Him! I found Baby Jesus!" I think we all found Him a little more that night.
Family treasures that you sometimes cannot put into anything but your memory.

Happy Holidays to you and your family! Any news on the kit of the month becoming available again sometime...I am sooo bummed that I missed it. My Mom was supposed to get it for me for Christmas and dropped the ball. I could have cried. it was the only thing I asked for! Please make my birthday (January 3rd) a good one by saying you'll get more.

Dear Lisa,

I enjoyed your nativity story and am glad you shared.

I'm new to your blog, but am a bit miffed as to why after SO many questions about the kit of the month selling out so quickly you haven't said more about it. Even if you could just respond that you don't know yet if more will be made available we would know that you read the responses and care about letting us know one way or the other.

Isn't God amazing!?! He knew just what you needed that night to calm your spirit and remind you of the true meaning of this wonderful season. He also showed us all, through your story, how much we can be blessed if we take the opportunity to serve others even when we are going to be a little put out by it. As my mom likes to say in those types of situations. "Don't let someone else be the blessing that you can be."

Have a blessed Christmas!

Hi Lisa,
I am posting here as not sure how to send a message to you. I just came to your site through Salt and Chocolate - little green blog -- now of course I'm stamped on you. I saw the December Kit of the Month - just what I have been looking for - any chance you might have an extra - even would take not so complete or gently used. Thanks so much for your work.
Happy Holiday to you and family
