Nadine's Response, Incredible Retreat and Winners Revealed

Thanks to so many of you who reached out to Nadine Fenchak (see my blog entry two down). She was so touched by all huge outpouring of cards and love you gave to her. (This is a small sampling of the cards and mail she's received.)

Here is a note from Nadine:

Dear Angels,

You have no idea how grateful I am to each and every one of you. Your thoughts and prayers and cards and notes have really made a difference. I can't believe how many people took the time to send me notes of encouragement and love. As the 22nd looms closer, I dread the day....but I make myself think of how many people will be thinking of Nate with me and I know I will not face the day alone. Thank you so much --you all truly are angels! This poem is a relection of Nate--please enjoy it and know that you have all helped me so much when I really needed it the most.

Love, Nadine and Paul Fenchak

Here is the poem Nadine refers to above (written by Carrie Wheeler, her 7-year-old son's teacher).

In Loving Memory of Nate Fenchak

His infectious smile warmed your heart
And his laughter was filled with joy.
His eyes were full of sparkle
Oh that precious baby boy!

He was full of inquisitive spirit
From his head down to his toes.
He was curious about new things
As all his adventures show.

He looked up to his big brothers
And wanted to be with Gabe and Paul.
He followed them from place to place
Where you'd see one, you'd see them all.

His teddy bear and toys remain,
As do our memories of his past.
Mommy and Daddy's little boy
Whose legacy will last.

We had him for such a short time
And it's so hard to understand
Why we had to give him to the angels
As part of his life's plan.

He will live on inside you
Even though you had to part
Because his tiny little feet
Left loving footprints on your heart.

My friend, Karen Clauson, is an amazing designer and crafter. She created these three canvases for Nadine. They are so beautiful and I couldn't wait to share them with you.

By the way, to find out more about Karen's Canvases (she creates them for any occasion--wedding, memorials, birthdays, awards), you can contact her at klclauson@comcast.net.

Please know we love you, Nadine and Paul, and are here for you. It's a pleasure knowing you!

Now to my next subject. During my teenage and college year, I loved the television show "The Facts of Life." My favorite character was Blair (Lisa Whelchel). I loved her spunky personality ("I just had another one of my brilliant ideas!") and cute hairstyles. For me she truly was my Hannah Montana. Several years ago, imagine my delight and excitement when she came to a photography class I taught in Texas. We exchanged numbers and since that time have become good friends. She is such an inspirational person and has written some amazing books. She truly is a wonderful role model for us all to follow. She came to CKU-Provo a few years ago and hung out with some of my neighborhood friends.

We all had such a good time together that we decided we had to do it again. So, for the last several months we've been planning the ultimate scrapbooking retreat at Sundance, Utah. We all were so excited and had every last detail planned. Life is unpredictable. Terrible storms and flooding hit Lisa's hometown at the same time she was scheduled to fly to Utah and her airport was closed down with over 700 flights cancelled. On top of it, her husband got stuck in California due to the bad weather making it impossible for Lisa to come. We all felt really bad about the situation--we were so excited to hang out with Lisa and she'd been looking forward to it for months. We still went on our retreat and had more fun than humanly possible (laughed and cried and laughed and cried some more) but really missed Lisa. We are planning a retreat for the near future. Lisa said she'd fly out of a very dry place the next time (Arizona?)! Here is a photo from our retreat and a little message for Lisa:

So--here's the scoop. If you guessed Lisa Whelchel or Blair from Facts of Life, you were eligible to be in the random drawing for the April Kit of the Month. (By the way, I couldn't believe how many people got it right!)

Lisa~
What a great response that Nadine has gotten. That just gives me goosebumps to know of all the wonderful people who would send a card to a stranger.

So sorry that Lisa was unable to join you & your friends this weekend. Maybe you will be able to do it again soon. I am attending a scrapbooking retreat weekend at the end of April & can't wait. I don't often get to do something for myself since I am a SAHM with 3 beautiful children so this will be my time of renewal & gabbing with family & friends & some women I don't know anything about yet.

Hope you had a fantastic Easter weekend. I enjoyed mine though it was fairly simple. I think God has a way of giving us exactly what we need at the right time.

WHOOOOHOOOO . . . another thrilled winner. Thanks so much for the giveaway fun.

ARGH on Lisa not making it to your retreat. That's so frustrating when things don'e work out like you want them to. I know our weather here in Dallas has been crazy over the last month and has altered many a plan!

Wow on the response for Nadine. I know how much cards and other little things help remind us others care when going through such a hard time.

Lisa...Love the outpouring of cards for Nadine. We had our Friday night crop at our store here in Vista, CA "The Pink Pineapple" and Erin our favorite hostess on Fridays brought in blank cards for all the ladies to make their own cards for Nadine. Erin told all the girls Nadine's story. It hit close to home for Erin as a mother of two boys and we also found out that Erin's good friend is Nadine's scrapping buddy. All the ladies that night made cards for Nadine and Erin will be staggering the mailing of them this week, in hopes of having what we call "Cards from California Week" An email was also sent out to our local girls to spread the word and have more cards sent to Nadine. I'm sending a box of blank cards today that were made at our monthly card exchange at the The Pink Pineapple. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nadine and her family!

So, did you get any scrapbooking done....hmm? I would have a hard time doing anything but laugh and talk (and scraplift everyone's pages!) I'm so bummed I didn't guess Lisa Whelchel! I liked her even in The New Mickey Mouse Club! Ha.Ha. She's so precious. Her gentleness is a direct reflection of her faith in Christ. So admirable, you are right. I can see why the two of you hit it off right away. HOpe the next time goes off without a hitch. It'll be here before you know it!

I'm so glad that Nadine got such a huge response and I see my pink and brown card right in the middle and I also sent her a poem about spending Christmas with Jesus and that's also there. It has the 2008 on the poem. What a precious boy Nate must have been. Thanks Lisa, for that opportunity to extend our love to her and her family.
I hope you had fun with Lisa W. it looks like you girls had a great time.

Lisa -
Bummer I did not win -- wrong Heather! Too bad Lisa was not able to attend the crop - -looks like fun.

Found this on Dedra's blog (Between Us) and thought would pass along some interesting Easter facts for those starting Easter pages
Easter 2008
A once in a lifetime experience!

Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon
after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20). This dating of
Easter is based on the lunar calendar that Hebrew people used
to identify pass over, which is why it moves around on our
Roman calendar.

Here's the interesting info. This year is the earliest
Easter any of us will ever see the rest of our lives! And
only the most elderly of our population have ever seen it this
early (95 years old or above!). And none of us have ever, or
will ever, see it a day earlier! Here's the facts:

1) The next time Easter will be this early (March 23) will be
the year 2228 (220 years from now). The last time it was this
early was 1913 (so if you're 95 or older, you are the only
ones that were around for that!).

2) The next time it will be a day earlier, March 22, will be
in the year 2285 (277 years from now). The last time it was on
March 22 was 1818. So, no one alive today has or will ever see it
any earlier than this year!

Hi Lisa and All you Angels out there.
What a great thing idea. The world could definately use A LOT more people who are considerate, kind and caring. I know it means a lot to those who you are reaching out too, even if they are complete strangers. That acutally makes it better, because it means that maybe our society does have a chance to make this world a better place.
It would sure be nice to see more people thinking about someone other than themselves.
I hope you all had a happy easter and I know it's a little late but I plan on going home tonight and making Nadine a card and getting it in the mail tomorrow (3/27/08).
My New Year's Resolution was to have a little more integrity.
Thanks again for the great idea.
Love your work and am a current subscriber to Creating Keepsakes, and a CKU Alumni (CKU Detroit 2007).

I want to thank all of you for sending Nadine and her family cards. Hope and compassion are two priceless gifts that so many of you graciously gave to the Fenchaks. Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and know that by you using your talent as an outreach, many are blessed.
