Kade Bearnson's a Winner!
Before I tell you about Kade's student body president outcome (see the post two below), I want to tell you about an experience we had when Kade was eight years old (this was in 1999). He was a brand new boy scout and the Pinewood Derby was right around the corner. For those of you who've never had a boy scout, the Pinewood Derby is an annual event where the boy scouts race hand-made cars against each other. The cars start out as a block of wood, then each boy scout and his father (or another adult) create what they hope is a winning car. Steve dug out his championship car he'd made with his dad when he was the same age and together he and Kade drilled, sanded and carved what they were sure was the perfect car (following the model of his winning car). The night of the big event, two-year-old Brecken got very sick. My mom, Grandma Downs, came over to babysit her while the rest of us went to cheer on Kade in the big race. There were 20 other boys competing and lots of family members cheering all the boys on. Here's a photo from the evening--Kade and his best buddy, Kyle, are showing off their cars.

Kade's little car did it's best in every heat but came in dead last in every race. It even started rolling backwards towards the starting line on a couple of occasions. Instead of giving up, Kade kept giving us an "It's okay" smile and valiantly kept competing. After the night was over, Steve felt like he'd let his little buddy down. When we got home, Grandma Downs asked Kade how the night went. I will always remember his reply: "My car came in last in every race, but before I went to the Pinewood Derby I prayed and asked Heavenly Father to help me be a good sport. And guess what, Grandma? I was a good sport!" I immediately got choked up and tears streamed down my face. What an invaluable lesson this eight-year-old taught me. Sometimes as an adult it's hard to remember to be a good sport--but through the mouth of babes I was reminded that it doesn't matter whether you win or loose--the important thing is to be a good sport. Kade was my hero that night!
Now fast forward to 2008. Last Friday Kade found out the results of his student body final elections. While it was a close race among the five boys who were running for president, Kade didn't win. He called from school to tell me the results and said the boy who won is a great kid. He came home from school in a very cheerful mood and took Brecken out on a "date" that evening. The next morning he got up, helped with chores for several hours, then spent the evening hanging out with extended family members (both grandmas and grandpas). It's been three days now and I've yet to see him feel upset or in a bad mood over this election. So--as you can see, Kade Bearnson really is a winner. Once again he taught me the importance of being a good sport--and to me that 's the best kind of winning of all!
Thanks for your support and Kade thanks you for watching his little movie. He was thrilled to see how many people have watched it!
Have a great Monday night. And--I can't wait to share with you what we did for Family Night tonight!
Sincerely,
Lisa

What a great attitude he has!
That's what makes being a parent all worth while.
Hi Lisa:
Wow, what an amazing role model your son Kade is. And what amazing parents he has too!
Congratulations to Kade for being such a good sport -- he is truly a leader, anyway, since others will look up to him as a positive example.
Thank you for sharing your story!
Shelly
Congratulations Kade on being a good sport!! I agree, that makes you a BIG winner!
I agree, Kade Bearnson is a Winner! Lisa, thank you for sharing these stories of your amazing son. It also reflects well on his parents, but I sincerely doubt that's why you shared them with us. True humility is something rarely seen these days. How beautifully refreshing. How I wish all men and women were as gracious as your son. A true disciple of Christ. I can't wait to see/hear what future callings await him. I'm sure he'll rise to meet them with the same grace and humility because Kade Bearnson is a Winner!!!
Thanks for sharing the update on Kade. You must be so proud for having such a great son. It speaks well of how you and your husband have raise him.
What a true testament to GOOD parenting. Well done Lisa and Steve! I'm sure Kade realizes there is more to being a leader then winning. He's truly the best kind because he leads quietly by example. My kids are still quite a bit younger but I hope we can do as well with them and you can bet I'll be reading my oldest this post about Kade tomorrow morning.

What a NEAT kid you have! Loved his video and hoped for the best for him... BUT... looks like he knows what is best and it isn't always winning. His winning attitude will take him farther than winning all the competitions in the world! Thanks for sharing him with us. I love to hear the neat things that others are doing. I have been blessed with a daughter who always looks on the bright side and has such a neat attitude; I learn so much from her daily. Aren't children the neatest blessings?!
Can't wait to hear what you did for Family Night tonight! :)

Wow! It sounds like you have a really amazing son!! I agree, being a good sport is being a winner!!
He is definitely a winner, and his movie was fantastic! It's so hard when there are many qualified people to fill a position. There is only going to be one winner, and the rest will be slightly disappointed. He sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders. I know you're proud of him, and you should be. We always want our children to succeed at everything, don't we? He's a winner for even TRYING! There are a lot of people that are content to sit back and not even TRY. Good for him! He's a great kid, Lisa!
I'm so proud Kade and of how you're raising such a wonderful young man! You're both an inspiration to me and my family.
Big Hugs to you both,
Tracy Marie
Hi there!
Tempestt was really touched by your lecture, as I have been telling her about you and your blog for a while. I am really glad that she got to experience your heart felt words first hand.
Cindi
I agree - Kade's a winner in my book! This might just be God's way of saving Kade for something even better than Student Body President... He's a great kid and you have to be super proud of him!
Can I just say WOW, that is a child to be proud of. He has more than most kids. His ablity to be a good sport will go a long way in life.
Amanda
Sorry Kade didn't win. He'd have been an AWESOME student body president.
You've raised a fine young man! Hats off to you and Steve. I hope I do as good a job raising my son as you've done with Kade! Congrats!!
I believe every experience has a lesson for us (not just the kids). There are nothing but good things in the future for an exceptional kid like Kade.
Thanks for sharing these stories, it helps those of us with little boys continue to teach them the valuable lessons that we learn every day.
Way to go Kade!
Stacy (Alberta, Canada)
Kade is indeed a winner ... in life and in spirit.
I knew he was a good kid. What a great story about the pine wood derby.
Lisa, This truly goes to show what great parents you and your husband are. What great support he has always had, to feel confident enough in himself to be happy for the person that did win. He truly is a winner, just as you said. I bet you are more proud of him for how he has responded to this loss (and the one from the Pinewood Derby) then you would have been had a won the election. What a great kid!
Congrats to you all!
Kelly
Although he didn't win I really do believe anyone who at least gives it a try is a winner! And sometimes losing can teach us more in the long run anyway. It takes courage to put yourself out there to even try so good for him.
As I used to tell my son, only one person can come away with the most votes (or highest score) but everyone can leave the contest a winner.
I love it!! He warms my heart. What an amazing young man he has become. luka bella www.lukabella.typepad.com
Lisa,
Kade is a WINNER! You know why? Because he taught you, Steve, his siblings and Us here who read your blogs a very important lesson in life. Your family is such an inspiration to me. Thank You for sharing this important event to us.

Wow Lisa, what an inspiring young man you've raised! I just love seeing and hearing of kids these days with such great qualities of character like this. He's truly and always be a winner, no doubt about it!
I love that you shared this great lesson with us viewers. Gratitude is attitude, what a positive Attitude Kade has. That is what life is all about.
Holly
Thank you Lisa for sharing these stories with us! Kade is definitely a winner in my books!! Thank you to you, Steve and Kade for being such an inspiration by these stories to me and my family. You and Steve are obviously wonderful parents to instill such great morals and christian beliefs in your children!! I just hope that I am doing that great of a job with my two boys!
Have a wonderful day!
Pam in MT
I always admire someone that takes a chance like that. I was always too chicken to even try. So, Kade, thanks for being such a great example of courage and class!!
You have definately succeeded in teaching your children what is IMPORTANT in life. It's not about the race, it's about how you got there! And Kade definately got there with grace and dignity! Good for him to have such a wonderful attitude!
Make it a great day!
Amy-Sue
Tell Kade that we're all proud of him on being a true winner! Winner's aren't always the ones who actually do the winning!
Kade Bearnson will go far in life. Our attitude almost always determines our altitude in life. Way to go, Kade! You stuck your neck out there and gave it your best shot. Gutsy, man! But, don't stop there! Keep going for what you want because you never know when someone will say "yes" to your efforts. Good Luck!
Lisa, What a winner son you have. Great story.
Lisa, Kade is such an example to everyone. Whenever I read of things he has done, I am so impressed with him. Some of that has to do with you and Steve, and the rest is a gift that God has given him. I hope my children can learn from Kade's example (as well as my own and my husband's of course).
Can't wait to hear what you did for FHE. I need some new ideas for my family!!

"You don't raise heroes; you raise sons. And if you treat them like sons, they'll turn out to be heroes, even if it's just in your own eyes." ~Walter Schirra Sr.
I must say that I think that Kade is an amazing young man. He is a hero in my book because anyone that can be a good sport, even when losing like crazy, is super special. You should definitely be a proud Mom & its no wonder you have tear filled eyes so frequently. :D
Kade really IS a winner! He works really hard at being a role model for his siblings. I hope my own son (currently an only child while we go through the adoption process a second time) will work to do the same someday.
As a teacher, I love having hard-working, yet fun-loving, good-hearted kids in my classes.
Congratulations to Kade for being an amazing winner all around!
What a great story about the Pinewood Derby. We just had ours with our two scouts and my oldest's car came in dead last every time, too. He WASN'T a good sport about it and I have the photos to prove it! He was Mister Sourpuss about it all night long. It will make a great lesson in sportsmanship - or the lack thereof - in a year.
You should be the proud mom of a great teen. My kids are still young but I think I want to teach them how to "lose" gracefully. Your son's video was great and I am sure that he will still be an integral part of the planning for his school. Way to go! Crystal Matushek
Hats off to Kade, I am so proud of him. The lessons he has obviously learned about sportsmanship and friendship will serve him much better through his life than being student body pres. What a great kid! He is a winner all the way around.
love ya Lisa,
carrie

I'm sorry Kade didn't win student body, but I think he's still a winner too! I hope my boys will show as much love for our Savior as your Kade does. He's just radiant reflecting Christ's love. Have a wonderful family night!!
Hi Lisa
Love all of your stories! You always find a way to lift me up! Parenting is one of the hardest jobs ever!! - - and you and Steve have done a fabulous job!!
Kade sounds like an amazing young man! Congratulations on being brave enough to try and also for such a positive attitude! Kade, you are already a winner in life!
Thanks!!
What a great kid! It's a testament to his parents, as well. I pray my two boys turn out like this- tell him good job!
Lisa
Sounds like Kade has already won! As a mom you'll understand my stress toinght, It's DS's Eagle Board of Review.
Tell Kade he's made us all proud
Lisa, congrats to you and your husband for raising such a GREAT son!
Sounds like you have raised a wonderful son...what a beautiful spirit he has...an inspiration!
Hey Lisa, Thank you so much for sharing such a touching and inspirational story with us. I read it to my boys, and was in tears by the time I finished reading it to them. They were both staring at me, wondering why I was crying, but I think they learned a good lesson from it as well. We are actually having our Pinewood Derby in 2 weeks, and I think I might relate your story to the boys before we even have the race. I hope this will inspire many more boys to share the same wonderful characterics that your amazing son, Kade, has! Thank you for always inspiring me! :)
Thanks for sharing this story. It did my heart good. -Kristi O
