Our Amazing Family Night, Donna's New Books and Goodbye Stacy J.
I think I've mentioned before that Monday nights at my house are Family Home Evening. This is a time where our family regroups and spends quality time together. We always go over the weekly calendar, have a spiritual thought and eat a yummy dessert. Sometimes we go bowling or to a movie. This past Monday night, neither Steve or I felt like cooking. So, I hauled everyone to Kohler's (our neighborhood grocery store), gave each person $7.00 and instructed each family member to find an item(s) to share for dinner. They had to be sneaky--it was a surprise and no other family member could know what they got. (It was hilarious running around the store trying hard not to be seen. by each other.) At the checkout, they were further instructed to put their item in a paper bag and not tell anyone what they got until dinner. When we got home, we sat around our round table and one at a time unveiled our dinner.

I was very impressed--I thought the meal would entirely consist of chips, candy and pop but I was pleasantly surprised. Steve got stuff to make bean burritos; Brecken: biscuits and Tootsie Pops; Sage: chicken nuggets; Collin: really hot chili and cheese-filled hot dogs; Kade: a frozen stir fry dish; Lisa: frozen fruits and yogurt to made healthy smoothies. After showing what each person bought, it was fun to all be in the kitchen together while we "made" dinner. You must try this at home--a great alternative to cooking and tons of fun!
Okay--if you haven't seen Donna Downey's new books yet, let me just say how great they are. They are from the series "Yes, it's a scrapbook" and they are tons of fun. The first one is called "A Photos First Approach to Designing Layouts."

The second book is "Fabric Scrapbooking." It's a super inspiring book:

I also want to give a shout out to my wonderful friend, Stacy Julian. Stacy is the brainchild behind Simple Scrapbooks Magazine, Big Picture Scrapbooking and some really great books. She is truly one of the most inspiring women on the planet. She has decided to dedicate more of her time to her website Big Picture Scrapbooking (by the way, you really should check it out and take a class or two) and will no longer be working with Simple Scrapbooks on a daily basis. She will be missed! We love you, Stacy!
I'm off for a camping adventure with my family for Spring Break. Hopefully it will be warmer weather where we're going.
I'll be sharing lots of new stuff starting at the end of next week--new QVC items, May Kit of the Month, my new book(s) that will be available soon and much more. And--there will be fun prizes to win--promise!
Have a great weekend.

LOVE IT! We will do your fun activity at our next FHE. My kids will totally enjoy that one! On another note, do share with us sometime some clues on how you "do it all". I'm a mother of 3 and am struggling to find that balance in daily routines. Seriously, I would love you to blog sometime about how you do it since you appear to be a true Supermom! Thanks! Can't wait to get your new book..
Hey Lisa,
Looks like you had a lot of fun Monday! What a great idea! I'm really looking forward to seeing your new products on QVC and the new May kit. Keep up the good work!!! We love your products!!!
Love the idea for preparing dinner in this way! Will definitely have to tuck this idea away in my head.
Lisa,

What a neat idea to make dinner together with some secret shopping. WOuldn't work too good for us just yet, the kids are still kinda small but I'll have to keep it in mind as they get a little older. Have fun camping. Hope you have some nice weather for it & enjoy your spring break. We just got hit with another foot of snow. Brrr....
For some reason, Brecken's choice of Tootsie pops and biscuits made me laugh! Sounds like a fun evening. I think Kohler's should give you a store gift certificate now for advertising their store on your site!
Oh no, QVC items and a May kit? Ca-ching!! Can't wait to see what's coming up! Have a great time camping!
Hi Lisa
What a fun thing to do! I will have to remember that for when my kids are a little older! Thanks for sharing all the fun things you do!! Love all the new books coming out and can't wait for the sneak peaks for QVC!!
Have a great camping trip!!
Thanks for sharing!
Cindy
I really enjoy reading your blog. Your such a great down to earth, easily relatable person!
I can't wait for all the upcoming things metioned, your book, QVC, KOTM wow!
I have to say the March KOTM is so cool! I just got it yesterday. Thanks for all you do to inspire us!
I can't wait to try this out. Thanks for sharing! Enjoy Spring break
I find that it is hard to have family night as my three kids get older and are involved in sports and such. How do you get all your schedules to work? Love your family shopping idea. Will have to try it. Thanks for all your great ideas.
Hi Lisa - As usual, I am in awe of your family life...you guys are the BEST! I have a question, though - how do you get everyone to be home on Monday nights? Don't the kids have sports, activities? How does it work? Also, I can't wait to see your new book and QVC items! When will you be on QVC?
Fun dinner idea :) thanks for sharing it with us! AND I can not wait to see the May KOTM!!! I anxiously await it each month! ShellyJ
How funny. We used to do this all the time when I was growing up. Of course, then we only got a dollar or two.
What a FUN FUN FUN idea for FHE! I think we will have to definitely try that one. I think my kids would love it. Thanks for sharing! :)
Mimi
Wow! What a cool idea! It's not the same old dinner, and things were mixed up in a good way. Fun!
I can't wait to see what you have new for us for our QVC shopping pleasure! I bought that bling kit that sold out in seconds, and I love it! Way to go!
I am looking forward to the new book. You have inspired me to do a family night. We are a family with 4 kids, 1 is a foster son we are trying to decide whether or not to adopt. Our oldest daughter wants him to go. Maybe this would help give them a chance to come together. Thank you!
Lisa, thank you for sharing your Family Home Evening ideas. I forget that the focus should be more on spending time together as a family and not planning elaborate lessons!! I like the term "spiritual thought".
I am trying to order a 2nd April Kit of the Month. Are they sold out? PLEASE tell me no.
Kathy
I am going to try that shopping idea for our next FHE...do you think my 18 month and 3 year old will find something good? Oh, maybe I'll have to wait a few years on this activity, but I'm going to try it someday! Thanks for the great ideas! :)
Hey Lisa,
I am SO HAPPY I discovered these kits last month and pretty bummed that I was missing them for so long. I got the March kit with all those wonderful 12x12 layouts and all my scraping buddies are SUPER jealous. I just wanted to say PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do more kits with the 20 layouts. It has been so wonderful for me.
I have been using the March kit to scrap 2004 - the year I had my 2nd child and didn't have time (or the energy) to scrap my adorable first one. I feel so guilty for not capturing those last memories of it just being the 3 of us and now I have been. I am looking back with some tears but mostly joy that I have these lasting memories in his book now. Thank you so much!
Lisa, you have the most amazing ideas to do as a family! I am always so intrigued by you! You are an amazing mother! Such an inspiration.
Thanks for sharing yourself on your blog, Lisa :) That family activity is SO creative & looks like so much fun. I'm a different denomination than you but this activity looks great for any family looking for some quality time together.
I love the dinner idea so much that this Friday (our family night) we are going to do this. The kids think this is going to be great & I even caught my oldest daughter (age 15) looking in a cookbook! (this is a rare sighting!!) Thanks for such a fun idea!!

What a great idea for dinner and fun combined! Thanks for the idea Lisa!! You totally rock for sharing!
Something else, in the spirit of sharing ideas, that you can do when you don't feel like shopping - take your list and a couple of kids and a husband or whoever is around, tear the list into equal parts and have a race to see who gets their items and in line first! It make shopping go fast, you don't end up with a bunch of extra junk (oh how I hate shopping when I'm hungry! LOL!)and it's fun :)
I can't WAIT to try your idea in my "dinner strike" future! :) Thanks again!
Have a great Mother's Day!
