I'm Back from QVC and Very Cold Ohio!

Just got back late last night from Ohio. I made a detour on my way home from Philly (where QVC is located) for several days to see my sister, Carolyn Thacker, and my friends Kim Wilson and the Laudenbachers, plus loads of nieces and nephews. Okay--love Ohio but it is absolutely FREEZING there right now! I spent a lot of time in front of my sister's fire place! Had a great time all in all.

Carolyn made this cake for me the first night I was there. She said our mom used to make it but I don't remember it from our childhood. It was out-of-this-world yummy!

It doesn't quite look like this (the frosting is more like a glaze) but just had to post this photo from Stephanie Jaworski.

Here is the recipe:

Lemon Velvet Cake
recipe from Clarine Downs

1 lemon cake mix
1 pkg. instant lemon pudding
4 eggs
3/4 cup oil
3/4 cup water

Mix together and bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. (Carolyn used a 9 x 13 pan.)

Icing:
1/3 cup orange juice (undiluted)
2 c. powdered sugar
2 T. vegetable oil

Use long fork and stick cake all over. Spoon juice over cake while hot. Cool and enjoy!

I also recently read this story and wanted to share it.

Two Wolves

One evening an elderly Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, "My son, the battle is between two "wolves" inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serentiy, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Hope you're off to a good week!

Lisa

I like the two wolves story, especially since I'm reading the second book in the Twilight series. Some days everything just ties together and makes sense! :-)

Love the fable and isn't that the truth. Something we should all think about all the time. Enjoyed the shows on the Q and had a bit too much fun...The brown truck is warming up as we speak.
Have a great week and hope you get warmed up.

Lisa,

This cake looks so yummy - can I ask a quick question? Do you use orange juice or the concentrate (the "undiluted" is throwing me off). And do you just pour the juice over the top and then use the powdered sugar and oil to make a glaze? Sorry, but I'd love to try it if I can figure out the details. :o) Thank you!

I LOVE that cake. I have a very similar recipe. And we lived in Ohio for four years, and after moving to Utah, it feels warm here in the winters in comparison

Your story reminds me of the old cartoon where you have the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other. Anyway, I hope everyone has a Great Day!!

Hey Lisa,
Thanks for the recipe- looks like one I'll have to try. Also thanks for the reminder to feed the "good wolf". A great message to focus on since we are going into the season of Lent tomorrow.

I am from Ohio and you are right, it is cold! I am ready for spring! Can't wait to try the lemon cake, my favorite flavor.

Love the wolf story, I think most of us feed the wrong one, I know I need to work on feeding the one that I want to win! Thanks for giving me something to think about today.

I LOVE that! I know I can get so caught up with sorrow, regret, etc. When that happens I have a pretty hard time of it. BUT when I focus on love, peace, joy and kindness...my spirit is refreshed and I feel AMAZING!:)

The cake sounds soooo yummy. Lemon happens to be my favorite! Glad you had fun.:)

Julie,

The undiluted orange juice means the frozen kind without the water added yet. For the icing, just add the orange juice, powdered sugar and vegetable oil together, then poor over the top of the hot cake.

Have fun!

I watched you on QVC...love your energy. Is David that much fun off air too? I also spied your pendant and I love it. Could you remind me who the artist is and if she has a website where she sells her treasures?
Thanks for sharing...you are so much fun...cindy

Lisa,

I made this cake last night and my family absolutely loved it!! I forgot to buy the concentrate so used the "regular" orange juice and it tasted great, the glaze just soaked into the cake a little more.

Have never met you, but love your blog and all the positivity you put out there. The two wolf story is great...and TRUE! I'm almost fully recovered from a painful brain surgery, and we always have a choice in how we approach our trials.

The story about the two wolves reminded me of a book my kids and I just checked out of the library. "The Girl that Drew Pheonix" by Demi. If you have never read her picture books, you ought to. They are some of my favorites. Others include: "The Empty Pot" and "One Grain of Rice". They are beautifully illustrated and teach wonderful morals.

Thanks for the recipe. I can't wait to give it a try. Since the snow doesn't want to give up here in Utah, I will bake a little springtime in the kitchen! :)
