Happy Birthday to Brecken and Michal!
Twelve years ago my little Brecken was born. She shares a birthday with her cousin, Michal, who's nineteen today!

Last night we met at an ice cream place (if you live in Utah, check out Sub Zero in Utah County) for an early celebration.
This is Brecken and another cousin, Mallory, goofing off!

Brecken had a great day. It started off with breakfast in bed, of course. (Kade is in Hawaii for a week and the girls have missed him so much that they've been trading off sleeping in his bed!)

I got the idea for twelve pancakes from Stacy Julian's blog. Instead Steve made a number 12 with pancake batter. All the candles set the fire alarm off. So Brecken woke up to a very loud sound rather than a melodic "Happy Birthday to You" song.
Brecken also got 12 balloons and 12 small gifts delivered to her at different times at school.
Tonight we all watched the video from the day she was born. It was a real tear jerker--kids grow up so fast.
We love you, Brecken. It has been a privilege having you as part of our family. You make our home a heaven on earth!
Brecken doesn't know it (hopefully she won't read this entry) but her friends are planning a big surprise party for her on Friday night. Works for me--took a little pressure off!
I was at a school meeting tonight and was introduced to this poem. Love it--very powerful.
Builders
I saw them tearing a building down,
A gang of men in a busy town.
With a yo heave ho and a lusty yell,
They swung a beam and the sidewall fell.
I asked the foreman if these men were as skilled
As those he would hire if he were to build.
He laughed and said, "Oh, no indeed,
Common labor is all I need.
For they can wreck in a day or two,
What builders have taken years to do."
So I asked myself, as I went my way,
Which of these roles am I to play?
Am I the builder, who works with care,
Measuring life by the rule and square;
Or am I the wrecker who walks the town,
Content in the role of tearing down?

Oh THANK YOU! I can't believe I had the blessing of popping by your blog today. I had heard that poem over 11 years ago, when I was a youth, and it stuck with me - only I couldn't remember how it went.
Last week, we were sitting in a Relief Society Presidency meeting, and we were discussing the topic of kindness, and I related the idea of the poem to my counselors. I told them I couldn't find it, but it relayed exactly how I felt about the subject. I can not believe that HERE the poem is! Awesome. I'm copying it and sending it off to my presidency right now. THANK YOU!
Happy Birthday, Brecken!!!!
Hi Lisa! Happy Birthday to Brecken!! My husband's birthday is also March 4th! I had everyone from my work use their cell phones at different times during the day to text him a happy birthday! He thought it was hilarious! Love that poem! We all need to be builders, that's for sure! Have a great day! Barb :)
Very cool poem! Happy birthday! :)
Happy birthday to Brecken. Most of all though, thank you for that beautiful thought-provoking poem. I am copying it to keep around.
I share a birthday with my cousin too! We are the same age(32), but she is "older" :) We joke about that all the time. She has 4 sisters but Her and I have a different connection, like twins. Happy Bday Brecken!
Happy 12th Birthday, Brecken!!
They grow up so fast, I can't keep up.
I just had my oldest daughter turn 18 Feb 20th and my next oldest will be turning 16 on the 14th of this month.
Thank you for that great poem. I needed it today!

Happy Birthday Brecken! Your family has so many wonderful traditions. I have a question. I love your open fridge/pantry policy and want to raise my family the same way. What if my 6 year old wants 2 or 3 bags of cheetos...you stop him right at this age...or some other way..how did you teach your kids portion control or was that never a problem. thank you so much for your time!!! Stephanie
Happy Birthday Brecken!
I've wondered the same as Stephanie, how do you get the kids to not eat everything in sight? I've been buying clementines for the kids to eat whenever. They're fairly inexpensive and I buy a box a week.
Also, when you were on QVC there was a product that you could cut the perfect mats with..what was that called and does anyone know the item number?
Happy Birthday to Brecken! My youngest son's birthday is also March 4th :) He's only two though.
Hi Lisa!
Happy Birthday Brecken! Enjoy your very special day!
Thanks for the beautiful poem!!
Cindy
Happy Birthday to your lovely, Brecken! She seems as sweet as she is beautiful! Hope they have a great time at her surprise party!!!
Happy Birthday Brecken! I hope your day was filled with happiness.
Happy Birthday Brecken I hope it was a wonderful day for you filled with happy memories. Enjoy being 12~!
I just wanted to say thanks for the Banana muffin recipe! It was so yummy!
Happy Birthday Brecken. What a fun pancake. Hey wanted you to know we will be doing a fast for Jerry on March 18, the day of his surgery. Sure do love you guys!
Happy Birthday Brecken!!
Lisa, I have the same question that a couple other reader have - it's about the food in the pantry/fridge - do you set limits? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
Hi Lisa B,
Just dropped by to see what's new, and I was thinking maybe you'll be back to qvc soon? Thought I'd seen that another scrapbooking or papercrafting show is coming up.
How delightful to read about your daughter's birthday! Happy Birthday Brecken from Arkansas!
I really enjoyed this poem you shared. I've been thinking alot lately about our words? How our words have the power to lift people up, or tear them down.
Your poem is perfect reminder.
Be blessed Lisa B...
and all your family.
Lea
