Under the Weather

Sorry I haven't been so good about blogging lately. At my son's last basketball game (three weeks ago) I started having massive stomach pains. Steve took me to the emergency instant care and found out among other things that I am very anemic. I was sent to the hospital for an iv and every other day I had to be given bags of an iron substance. Weird thing--after the first treatment I no longer craved ice. I told the doctor about this but he said it's an old wive's tale (low iron and chewing ice have nothing to do with each other). I swear they do. I've craved ice for eight years now and chewed on it nonstop. Now that craving is completely gone. Yesterday I had surgery to further correct the anemia problem. So--I'm in some pain and just taking it easy for the next few days.

Mark your calendars for March 25th from 1-3 p.m. I have a two hour QVC Creating Keepsakes show.

Have a great week. Here's hoping spring is right around the corner--it's been snowing here in Utah.

Sincerely,
Lisa

Hi Lisa, Sorry to hear you have been feeling under the weather. You were right about the ice chewing being a symptom of the anemia. I found this article on Wikipedia that explains it.

Hi Lisa
I am sorry that you have been in pain and not well!
I am currently under-going the Venofer IV Iron treatments too. I hope that makes you feel much better ( it should!!!) and that you recover quickly from your surgery.
Since October I have had a double mastectomy ( still going thru reconstruction, long process) and a complete hysterectomy. Now i am doing the IV Iron and have just started my 5 years of a pill a day to prevent further Breast Cancer.
I am hopeful and feeling better. I am married and have 2 daughters ages 10 and 15 - lots to be thankful for and to get better for.
My prayers are with you! and I'll be watching for you on QVC!

My iron levels were extremely low for several years. Tried everything to get them up. Ended up having a hysterectomy - solved everything. And, I stopped chewing ice - much to the delight of my husband who couldn't stand the sound. My doctor said ice chewing is definitely a sign of anemia - so is craving/eating weird things like chalk and dirt - so I guess I should be glad I just craved ice. Take care of yourself! Your family needs you strong and healthy. :)

Don't you just wonder sometimes when doctors pooh-pooh things that you know are happening with your body? I read that Wikipedia article someone mentioned and it sure sounds legit to me. I had an aunt that I'm told ate dirt from the flower pots when she was pg - and in that article there is a reference to soil. Strange - but still a need for something her body was missing, I guess. Hope you're feeling better soon, Lisa. Can't wait for a new QVC show. Hope you're with David.

The surgeon is wrong; what you have is called pica, and i am an internist and have seen it;
please see below from wikipedia in simple english:

The scant research that has been done on the root causes of pica suggests that the majority of those afflicted tend to suffer some biochemical deficiency, and more often, iron deficiency[citation needed]. The association between pica and iron deficiency anemia is so strong that most patients with iron deficiency will admit to some form of pica.[citation needed] Often the substance eaten by those with the disorder contains the mineral of deficiency.

Hope you are feeling better; all of us out here in web-land are praying for you! You got to get better soon! We want to see you on QVC this month!

Hey Lisa-

I was taking prescription and otc iron tablets for years but they hurt my stomach and made me constipated. I discovered something from my health food store a couple months ago THAT IS AWESOME AND TOTALLY SOLVED MY ANEMIC PROBLEM!!! and I've already recommended and helped a couple other people already. I take Liquid CHLOROPHYLL made by a company called "Natures Sunshine" i take 1-2x day with cup of water or any liquid i think. you can't taste it and it has helped me in so many other ways too! i no longer have to take iron supplements at all, my periods/cramps are SOOO much better and i have more energy. it truly is amazing and i'm so glad i found this product!! I just wanted to pass that info along and if you do end up trying it, i would love to hear if its helped you.

Hi Lisa,
I too have a huge ice craving. I have for at least 10 years, my ice maker in my fridge can't keep up with me. My doc is the one that said it was because of the anemia.( I also crave the smell of fresh dirt, he said that was a symptom as well) When I read your post, a light went on because just lately I have been experiencing a lot of lower abdominal pain( I am not pregnant) and was wondering if I should go have it checked out. Over the last 10 years the only time I haven't chewed ice was immediately after giving birth I was right back at it within a month or two?? Go figure? thanks for the post, I think I will go get checked out!

I have always hated ice in my cups. Couldn't even stand it touching my lips. Then all of a sudden I started craving it like an addict! About a year later they found out I was so anemic, they couldn't perform the surgery I needed. I had to go into the doctor's office for an 8 hour iron drip and the ice cravings stopped. So it is NOT an old wive's tale. It's fact!

I'm a doc and i do believe the ice and anemia is TRUE!!!
Its called "pica" and involves ice or other nonnutritive substances. I had it with my first pregnancy!!!

OHMY....surgery....ugh. Hopefully just a quick scope? I pray for speedy recovery!

3:34 PM
Blogger Terri C said...

I also agree with shmoop.
I am a registered dietitian and learned many years ago about "Pica". It is the name for a nutrition disorder in which a person craves and eats non food substances.
Common are clay, paper and ice. If a person has these symptoms, as a nutritionist, we are taught to look for anemia (low iron) as anemia could cause this disorder.
I remember when you mentioned this on the air during a QVC show about a year ago and thinking it could be iron deficiency.
A friend of mine was just telling me about how they just loved to chew plain ice in the evening. I immediately told him he should have his iron checked!
Pica isn't always caused by anemia, but it is the most common reason for it, is my understanding.
What a coincidence!
I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Lisa,

If I may add this in...When I was anemic 10+ years ago, I got sent to a hematologist who asked me first thing off the bat, "Do you crave ice?" It's not a wive's tale.

3:41 PM
Blogger nfaband said...

Gosh ... I know all about the ice chewing thing, I was going through a 10 pound bag every two days, found out I was anemic, went on Iron pills and am much better now with no more ice cravings. I'm having surgery in June, hoping that will fix everything up so I no longer have to take the iron pills.
Happy to hear you are on the mend Lisa!
