Oh What Do You Do in the Summertime?
The first week of summer has come and gone and can I just say I love this time of year--my absolute favorite. So far we've had several BBQs, pool parties, a hike to a cool cave, pedicures, and many different types of camps. Kade is still gone for two more weeks. He's in a place called Palmyra, New York today.
Okay--so I have to tell you that this is my new favorite sport.

Please, go buy a wiffleball set and have tons of fun. Old and young alike can play. I still have a funny image in my head of my then 78-year-old mother sliding into second base last summer! Thanks, Kerri, for capturing this family moment!
Happy Warm Weather! Remember--it's doesn't matter what you do as long as it's together.
Sincerely,
Lisa
P.S. Please share some of your favorite activities to do in the summer. I want to go on lots of adventures with my kids.

We all enjoy going to the beach. To swim, relax, read, play and all has a common interest in finding pretty stones. Some of them gets painted at home on rainy days, some lay around in the garden - reminding us of beach time.
Have a great summer :-)

One of our favorite things to do in the summer is letterboxing. The kids think they are on a treasure hunt every time!!
If rain does not interfere, our adventure this week will be an outing to a pick your own place for strawberries and snap peas.
Next week, we'll take a day trip to NYC and get half price tickets for a B'way show. Also planning to try letterboxing or geocaching later this month. We live adjacent to a state park and have heard there are multiple hidden treasures to find!
I get each of our kids a spiral notebook every year. We try to write in it every day - not really a journal-type, but it could be. I usually give them a topic (but they can choose their own, if they wish) and we all sit and write at the same time. One of our children writes one story every summer and adds to it each day. The younger ones usually illustrate as well (sometimes they do more of this that the writing ;). It is fun to look back at the end of the summer and see how much we did and what we wrote about. It keeps the writing skills up in a fun way too! ~TanyaS
I saw the idea to create a list of 100 things you want to do this summer. My kids are still really young and so most of ours are normal every day things like blow bubbles, jump rope, play on the swingset. We also had them think of some bigger family adventures that we can do like visit a lake, see a waterfall, go on a hike, picnic in the mountains that they can look forward too. Hopefully by the end of the summer, they'll look back at our checked off list and realize we did do a few fun things.
I have five boys..four of which are in school. The first week of summer break..we pull out the scrapbooking stuff and I have them help me scrapbook their school books!! I figure that they are the ones with the best memories of what what was going on in all of the pictures..so that is always the first thing we all do together in hte summer!!!
You are an awesome mom! What a great picture. I have a wiffle ball, now I just need to find a bat. My favorite thing to do in the summer is what they kids call school time. It began when they were younger and we would focus on reading and writing. This summer my daughter and I are doing an American Girl theme where for a few weeks we will pick one and do crafts and cooking from that time period. My 12yr old son wants to focus on greek mythology. That will be interesting... Not sure where I am taking that yet. Have a great summer!
Lisa-
Palmyra NY is right near me! I met you when you visited family in Rochester NY several years ago--at a scrapbook store in a suburb of Rochester. Hope you have a wonderful summer! We were playing wiffle ball last night with our two girls!
I'm also starting a little summer trip with my girls to take an afternoon snack one day a week to a different spot in our town--their choice. We ate on the steps of our library last week!
Each year around this time (my kids are not done school till the end of June) we have a family meeting and we each write down things we want to do in the summer. Some can be big but most have to be small and inexpensive but together. We take the ideas and make up a wish list for the summer and when we are looking for an idea we look at our brain storming board. Some ideas are berry picking while others may be going into Toronto to a favourite restaurant and this year our chart includes Geocaching as it is available in our area. I would see if you can do that - I think your family would really enjoy that especialy if you wait until Kade is back.
** by the way - our summer fun board is made up of card stock and I use my circle or square punch and colour code it to local, day trip and big so we can easily pick out an activity that fits our time and budget on the day we are looking for ideas!
Have a great summer!

Hi Lisa... met you a few times but recently at CPR Stamford when you were talking about you and Becky being in the same ward...and we got a laugh out of that!
My kids are too small (18 months & 6 weeks) but friends of ours Letterbox... (http://www.letterboxing.org/) and love it! It sounds like you and your kids would really enjoy it-especially the part about creating your own rubber stamp! Fun, adventurous, and creative all rolled into one! Looks like there are tons of clues in Utah-better yet- if you know you are traveling you can print clues ahead of time and take them along-to whatever state you are in! Happy Summer!
Have a BLAST!!!!!! My summer is going to be very different. All the kids live in a different city and my mom will need constant care when she gets out of the hospital. so my summer will be sitting with her. We have the coolest back yard and your kids would love to go jetskiing, so if you have a weekend to come to Idaho, let us know!
Play twister, or ring toss, or washers or something semi competitive, but where you still can be silly. We love it
The drive in! What is more summer than watching a movie in out in the night air? Take a blanket and sit on the hood or on the ground. (or you can rent a 1950's convertible =) )
Shoot, I am envious of all your family trips I can't even put something down.. LOL... One family trip minus mom (me) and new baby, was that my husband took our two tween kids to Moab, Utah for a week. They had tons of fun. Only reason I didn't go, is that I don't think a one year old that isn't walking yet would have much fun four wheeling over dangerous passes.. LOL..
Hi Lisa!
Summer is my absolute favorite time of the year also! There are a lot of people who think I'm crazy for the fact that I can't wait for school to be over so that I can have my kids home with me all summer! It's just something I have always loved and cherished!
Some of the fun things we've done in the summer are similar to yours, but there are a few others I'll share with you. One of my favorites is "4-square". We would draw a big 4-square on the driveway with chalk and play the game. All the neighbor kids would see us playing and come to join in. It was a blast! Another great one is what my kids call "night games". I have 2 boys and our neighborhood is full of boys that are the same ages as my kids. They would always wait until it got dark, then play "ghost in the graveyard" or "capture the flag". Both boys are older now, but they have wonderful memories of those long summer nights with all their friends!
We also played some great basketball games with a twist. These can include lots of kids too. One is called "lightning" and the other one is called "Poison". They love these games because they not only allow for more kids to play, but they are also a nice change from a normal game of b-ball. Since your boys play basketball, they've most likely heard of these. If not, you can google them to find out how to play.
One of my other more expensive things we did was go to Wisconsin Dells. If you've never been, you should try it sometime! As much as your kids love water, they would absolutely have a ball! You and your husband would enjoy it too! You only need to be there for three or four days, but could stay longer if you wanted.
Thank you for your blog, Lisa. It's always nice to see what you're up to. Enjoy those kids!
Love, Barb :)
We go camping. In fact, we just returned from a weekend camping trip yesterday. It's nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of every day life...cell phones, TV, the internet and just enjoy eachother's company and nature
Hey Lisa, so glad you're enjoying your summer. Ours is yet to begin here in Buffalo, sigh.
Was Cade by chance in the Amherst Ward on Sunday? I arrived at church to see 130 youth from Highland, UT in our gym! They were so awesome - they were already sitting when we arrived, and we are always early. After the meeting they put their chairs away and I heard they had put them all out, too. Anyway, when I read that Cade was in Palmyra I wondered if that group had been his. I hope he enjoys the sites!
Have fun the rest of your summer!
Jackie
P.S. I did meet you at CKC Buffalo 3 years ago!
We go on the trampoline and take walks around the neighborhood. We have a pool in our backyard that we frequent.
Jackie,
Yes--that was the ward he was at on Sunday. I so wish he could have met you!
Have a great summer!
Lisa
Hi Lisa,
One thing we do a lot is walk on the boardwalk (I'm about 30 minutes from the NJ shore). We play games, eat ice cream, and just walk and enjoy the view of the ocean. The kids go on a few rides.
Aside from the usual swimming, and playing outside, one other thing we do is go to the movies. Other than summer, we don't go to the theater much, we rent. But we like to beat the heat in the summer. On those sweltering days, there's nothing like sitting in an air conditioned theater.
Enjoy!
Gail
Tie dye shirts for July 4th! I know alot of people do the same but this is one that my kids never let me forget to do b/c it's become such a tradition.
I love the tradition we have of the ABC's of summer...we start July 1st with A...usually Adam's choice (my son...A..) then B...we play baseball or Baskin and Robbins, ice cream...C we make cupcakes...it is fun

Last summer I bought each of my kids a disposable camera. I sent them out into the neighborhood to take ALL of the pictures, of whatever they wanted. We then took the cameras to be developed. I loved to see what they were each interested in. My son had pics of cars and my daughter loved landscapes and flowers. It was then time to create a book for their photos. It was an all day activity and I am going to do it again this year. They had so much fun.
We're also playing a game this summer called "alphabet summer." We do one thing, or go one place that starts with each letter of the alphabet. Example: A=arcade, B=bowling, C=cooking, etc.
