My Amazing Trip. Plus Love Idea #1!
Hey Everyone!
I'm going to give you a brief (okay long) recap of my trip to Pennsylvania (Amish Country), St. Louis and Ohio. But first, this is one of my favorite weeks of the year. It's the week of LOVE and I LOVE it! Last year I showed some decorating ideas around my house. This year I'm going to share with you some of my favorite things--gifts, treats, sayings--all having to do with the big Valentine's Day.
Okay--so I'm always looking for the perfect gift for my sweetheart. I was in Ohio visiting family when two of my nieces told me about a book that's sweeping the nation. It's called "The Love Dare"--a 40-day challenge for husbands and wives to understand and practice unconditional love. It's based around the movie "Fireproof." So--I went and bought the movie (never have seen it) and the book "The Love Dare" and can hardly wait to give them to Steve this Sunday. What a perfect gift for the two of us.
For example, day two challenges each of you to do at least one unexpected gesture as an act of kindness. You then have a place to report your findings. Day nine has you think of a specific way you'd like to greet your spouse that day (it has to be with a smile and enthusiam).
This just seems like one of the neatest gifts you can do together. I highly recommend this book.
My trip to Amish Country was so amazing. If you ever want to go on a girl's trip, here are some of the things you should see and do (contact me if you want more information).
This is Rebecca and Sam Riehl. They are old-order Amish and their parents are good friends of mine. (The children can be in photos if they aren't baptized.) They invited us over for an Amish meal (the brown-butter noodles are my favorite!). The Riehl's have a quilt/gift shop behind their house and they love visitors. You can also check out their big red barn and see first hand the milking process. Go here for more information. Tell them Lisa Bearnson sent you! (Sorry about the not-so-good quality of photos. I took Collin's new Christmas camera and am not impressed with the results. I think it will have to go back to Costco. Thank goodness for their wondeful return policy.)
My friends and I also ate the best Italian food at this sweet gal's house. I met Therese Givens (fourth from the left) through scrapbooking and she's become a wonderful friend! By the way, the gal on the left, Jennifer Beckstrand, is a friend from high school and is in the middle of writing a Christian Amish romance novel! I took her to Lancaster to do some research. Make sure you look for her book this summer. Annette Mortensen is next to her, and my pal, Ann Hewlett (third from the right), is the girl who set my hubby and I up over 20 years ago!
I also have a dear Amish friend who cooks and serves an authentic Amish meal in her home. Let me know if you're going out that way and I'll send you her information.
There are so many other things I could tell you about my trip, but these are some of the highlights of Lancaster.
Next I went to St. Louis to be with Annette Mortensen and her family for several days. We decided to take a quick trip up to Ohio to see family members. While I was there, my niece convinced me to go to a Zumba (Latin aerobic class) at the YMCA in the small town of New Bremen. There were 20 people in the class including the instructor, my niece and me. Little did I know that the class was filled with mostly scrapbookers (not on purpose). One by one, gals were asking me at random times during the class "Are you the scrapbook lady?" or "Are you Lisa B.?" The kicker happened when I was leaving. Two ladies came running up to me and asked if I was Becky Higgins!
Okay--the really funny thing happened a few hours later. This cute lady found out I was in town and where I was staying and came by to say hi. (In a round about way she knows my nieces!) She brought her children plus two of her friends children to meet me (along with a Creating Keepsakes magazine for me to sign)!
A little while later, she brought her sister in law over. I love meeting new people and was so honored they came by to say hi.
What a FUN day! Who would have know there were so many scrapbookers in that part of Ohio. Cara, Heather (both pictured above) and my niece Chiara are thinking of putting on a charity crop in Minster or New Bremen probably next fall. For sure I'd have to go! Drop me a note if you're interested in coming (it's about an hour from Dayton) and I'll keep you posted on the details.
I also hooked up with these dear friends--Virginia and Jim Laudenbacher from Zanesville. Their daughter was a good scrapbooking friend of mine and tragically passed away a year and a half ago. They have become second parents to me. I simply adore them. (Virginia made my necklace out of church bulletins!)
Annette, Megan (Annette's daughter) and I stayed with Rachel Heaton in Air Force housing in Dayton. She was the perfect host and is a great little scrapbooker.
I also was able to have lunch with my friend, Michael Lazorchak, and his aunt, Palanita, and the local Marion, Illinois scrapbook store owner, Judy.
Sorry for the long post but I just didn't know what to cut out. I'll be back tomorrow with another LOVE idea.
Until then, be warm and safe.
Sincerely,
Lisa
P.S. We were able to talk to Kade this morning (at 6:00 a.m. to be exact!). Missionaries are allowed to call from the airport on their way to their assigned destination. He's so happy and loves being a missionary. His foot hurts and the cast is a pain but he's surviving. It was so great to hear his voice. He's in Raleigh, North Carolina tonight safe and sound!

Glad you got to talk to Kade. This way you know he really is okay. He'll have great things to write inhis journal and tell his children and granchildren about how his mission started.
Your trip sounds like so much fun.
Stacy
I love your travel stories and that you have and meet friends everywhere you go. One can never have too many friends. I can't wait to hear some of Kade's stories that involve people who know his mom. You're great Lisa!
What a fun trip you had! I love all the great ideas from Pennsylvania. I live close by and haven't been up there yet. I need to make a fun family trip.
I love your valentine's gift ideas. Thank you so much for the great ideas!

Lancaster ROCKS! They have so much to do there. Tons of shopping, women's hockey tourneys, scrappin', country views, you name it. I love going there.
Glad to hear Kade is handling the pain and can get around. Since he's in NC, tell him to have some grits with butter and syrup. It won't make the pain go away, but it'll make his stomach happy!
Hi Lisa. I can't believe you were actually in New Bremen, Ohio!!! I live halfway between New Bremen & Dayton. I would definitely be interested in participating in a charity crop ... I'd drive just about anywhere to get to crop with you!!!! I hope you were able to get to visit the Air Force Museum when you were here; it's such an amazing place!!!
Hey Lisa,
When I was in 8th grade our class took a trip to DC and the surrounding areas. We stayed the night in Intercourse. We were not allowed to buy anything with the name of the city on it, especially the t-shits that said "I love Intercourse". It was a great trip. I enjoyed the Amish country and have always wanted to go back.
Nicolle
It sounds like you had a fantastic trip. My Grandpa had a shirt that said "I Love Intercourse" in big letters and underneath it it had "PA" in much smaller letters! He was such a hoot! Thanks for giving me a little moment to remember him.
I hope Kade gets settled in quickly.
Sounds like you had a wonderful trip!
I bought this book for my parents' 45th wedding anniversary on Jan 2 this year. They are really enjoying it. In their case, it is a book to make a strong marriage stronger. They are an amazing example.
Don't ever worry about writing too much. If I can't enjoy you in Creative Keepsakes then I will be able to enjoy your blog. Glad Kade got to NC. Now the fun really begins. So until next time take care and keep smiling. Give the best to your family.
Hi Lisa,
Sounds like you had a wonderful trip. What a treat getting to hear Kade's voice, even if it was at the crack of dawn.
I am checking out the book u rec. on Amazon right now. Sounds like a winner. Might have to order it.
Is it very very religious? Just wondering.
Thanks,
Jackie from Tpa
What a great trip, Lisa! I love Amish country- haven't visited since before I had my kids and I am hoping to get up there sooner than later. We used to go and visit a lot when I was a kid.
Glad to hear that Kade is doing okay- hope the pain he is feeling in his foot goes away soon. Continued prayers~
Scrappin' Jackie--
Hey! The book is pretty religious--based on Bible. But--it truly does have great information that anyone of any faith can put into practice. I really am excited to take the challenge!
Good Luck!
lisa
Okay, so I had to add I ran out and bought the book The Love Dare for my hubby for V-Day. Thank you for the idea. I live in the great snowed under state of Virginia, and I had to get out and get it before Sunday. It was a little warm before the snow started coming again. It is mighty cold and white out there.
PLEASE let me know if you set up something in New Bremen or Minster. That's only about 3 hours from our house & I'd love to see you again!

That's great that you went to Wright Patterson in Dayton! I have lots of friends there that transfered from bases I'm at/was at! If I had been there too I could have met you!
Glad to hear your missionary is doing well!
It's funny you should mention Zumba. Although I have water therapy class three times a week for various health problems, my husband kept badgering me to do more. So I joined a Zumba class and am going to Valentine surprise him tomorrow by taking him with me to the class and then out to lunch. We've been married 39 years. Two weeks into the class I discovered the instructor is also LDS and pregnant with her fourth boy!I'm having fun!
I love to hear your Lancaster stories! I have been there many times and it brings back such great memories to hear about those places again! I love your Ocean City sweatshirt! I have the same one(my Dad lives there) My favorite place!
Our couples Sunday School Class did the Fireproof study last year. When we were finished, we all got together and watched the movie. Even after 30 years of marriage you can glean so much from this book.
Sidenote in the movie where Kirk Cameron kisses his wife, it was actually his "real life" wife he kisses. True love and respect!
Glad you got to talk to Kade, hope he mends fast.
Will you be coming to Fort Worth anytime soon?
Happy Love Day to you and yours,
Susan
You were in my part of the country... we live in the same county as Wright-Patterson AFB. :-)
Glad you enjoyed visiting Ohio. The weather here is unpredictable, but the people make up for it!
Kelly in Ohio
Our church held the "Love Dare" last February along with a couples dinner. Then we watched the movie. A great idea! I can't believe you were so close to me (I live about 15 minutes from New Bremen in Wapakoneta OH.)! How exciting!
Would love to attend a crop there next fall. There aren't many scrap stores around...it would be good to connect with some gals who scrapbook!
My heart skipped a beat when I saw Zanesville, OH mentioned in your post. I remember the story my friend, Beth, told about how she became friends with Lezley through you, way back in the early days of CK, when there was a Queen of the Crop feature in the magazine.
Sadly, Beth also passed away a few months ago.
I love going to Kings in Intercourse because they have all the things I love - furniture, home decor and scrapbooking. Thankfully I live in driving distance!
Hi Lisa-thanks for a nice post with some great information, I love Amish country, thanks for the insider tips!!
My husband is from Coldwater, Ohio so we pass through New Bremen often when we are going home to visit. It is a great area of our state. (We live near Columbus in Pickerington, Ohio)
So I would love to attend a charity crop or any crop with you in New Bremen or Minster (or anywhere in Ohio!) Please keep me posted.
Thanks for sharing!

How exciting that you were in New Bremen!!! That isn't too far from us, in Troy, OH! So glad to hear you enjoyed your stay here! I was lucky enough to get to meet you, when we lived in Arizona several years ago. And, I think it's really cool that you were here recently. I'd love to hear more about your nieces charity events. Please keep us posted!
